Trento is in north-east Italy in the region of Trentino-South Tyrol. Deep in the surrounding mountains, the city nestles in the impressive Adige valley. Trento’s most beautiful sights include the square with the Cathedral of San Vigilio and the Fountain of Neptune. The cathedral you see today was built in the 13th century above the tomb of the city’s patron saint, Vigilius. The outside of the church is in the Lombard-Romanesque style, as is evident from the towers, some of which are free-standing.
Another of the city’s highlights is the limestone castle Castello del Buonconsiglio. which looms above the north-east of the old town on a rocky outcrop. In the past, the castle served as the prince-bishop’s residence; today it houses an art history museum, exhibition rooms and a restaurant. When you visit this castle, you mustn’t miss the Venetian Loggia, which offers an incredible view of the surrounding mountain landscape.
