Amersfoort is the second-largest city in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Your BMW motorbike is a quick and easy way to reach the city’s many unique attractions. Approaching the city from the north-west, you will immediately see the city at its best: the pointed grey towers of the Koppelpoort medieval city gate rise impressively above the river Eem. While the gate used to keep enemy intruders at bay, today it is one of the city’s landmarks. The Tower of Our Lady, or Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, also originates from the Middle Ages. Its inspiring architecture features many elaborate details that in typical Gothic style. Locals refer lovingly to the tower as “Lange Jan”, or Long John. On the Hof, the town square of Amersfoort, you can then enjoy a delicious meal or coffee, while soaking up this city’s idyllic charm.

Discover Amersfoort by bike and follow the Tulip Route
Amersfoort is an ideal base for exploring the rest of the Netherlands. It will only take you about one and a half hours to reach the capital Amsterdam at a leisurely pace on country roads. If you’d like to plan a longer motorcycling tour, you could follow the Tulip Route through Flevoland. From Amersfoort, you can also reach the municipality of Dronten in less than an hour. From here, follow the Tulip Route to Lelystad and Zeewolde, where you can then make your way back to Amersfoort. From mid-April to early May, you can enjoy the wealth of colour of Dutch tulips from the seat of your bike. It’s always a good idea to have a break during your travels – charming cafés and farmhouses are there to offer refreshment. If you wish to park up your bike for a little while, a very special highlight is available to you in Flevoland: book a helicopter round trip above the tulip fields and enjoy a unique bird’s eye view.
